Seminar Title Description
4IHST 4-in-Hand/Shelley Techniques 4-in-Hand is one of the flashiest techniques in bell ringing! It allows a ringer to double the number of notes that he or she can play at one time. As with most things, adding bells means adding responsibilities! In this class we will cover all angles of 4-in-Hand and Shelley ringing, from the first steps of building your stacks and ringing to finger damping so those sixteenth-note runs are fast and clean. You may not leave this class a proficient expert, but you will understand the techniques and rehearsal tools needed to learn and practice 4-in-Hand on your own.
AR Advanced Ringing This class is for the more experienced handbell ringer or director. Focusing on intermediate to advanced techniques, ringers will study the skills needed to comfortably play chromatic passages, meter changes, challending tempos, tricky rhythms and expressive dynamics. A variety of articulation techniques will also be covered. Challenge yourself and others in this fun, fast-paced class!
BB Bass Bell Techniques Whether called bass bells or buckets, these big bells have their own unique techniques and challenges. Beginning with warm up ideas, this class emphasizes playing without damaging your bells or your body. Creativity is a must! Learn how to pick up, ring, damp and mallet bass bells properly. Bell assignment ideas, sound production, dynamic control, modifications and a variety of techniques will be reviewed.
EDR1 Everyday Ringing: Part I The Everyday Ringing class covers the basic ringing and music techniques that every ringer needs to know, whether you are just beginning or have been ringing for a while. In this class we will learn and review the basics such as table ringing, dynamic control, and stopped sound techniques.
EDR2 Everyday Ringing: Part 2 This class is an extension of the Everyday Ringing: Part One class. We expand into additional techniques that ringers must be familiar with when playing today's handbell music, such as multiple bell handling skills.
MBHS Multiple Bell Handling Skills While Multiple Bell Handling Skills seems like the province of solo and ensemble ringers, choir ringers also need to learn these fundamental techniques. Remember what it's like to pick up and ring that "accidental" bell and then return to the original bell with everything in the "wrong" hands? The purpose of this class is to help you move among your assigned bells iwth more fluency, making changes smoothly and confidently and still keeping your place in the music. These skills are a must if you wish to learn solo and ensemble ringing from the table, so come learn "weaving" and other skills to make your ringing more confident!
MEMC Making Every Minute Count Learn how to make every minute of your limited rehearsal time valuable. This class examines variety in rehearsal techniques, from a review of rehearsal space and physical warm-ups to increasing the sight-reading powers of players, along with ways to attack difficult passages and to draw insight to the musical interpretation of the work for presentation in concert or worship services. Players will enjoy the skill-building activities while developing an appreciation for different styles of learning and directors will find the secrets of saving time in rehearsal by using brief rehearsal plans.
NT New Techniques: How To Get Started! Is your group in a ringing rut? Are you interested in learning about new or updated handbell techniques? Have you read about them but need help getting started? Then this is the class for you! This is a great opportunity to ask questions, get some fresh ideas and learn new (or new to you) skills.
RR Ringing Right Let's talk about the best way to ring bells and how you can not only help yourself become a better ringer, but help others in your choir too! This class, designed for ringers and directors alike, will cover the ins and outs of ringing, much like our Everyday Ringing classes. In addition, we will prepare you and teach you how to help other ringers in your choir become better ringers. Get the most out of yourself and your choir!
RWM Ringing With Musicality Musicality is defined as “musical ability; a knowledge of or sensitivity to music.” Have you ever listened to a performance and all you heard were notes with no direction or feelings? In this class we will “decipher” the musical terms and symbols within a variety of musical examples to bring each piece to life. Through the knowledge and use of the music theory seen in each piece combined with personal interpretation, we will teach you to create an enjoyable listening experience for your audiences. Ringers and directors alike will enjoy learning these music analyzation and ringing skills that will enhance any piece of music!
SER Solo/Ensemble Ringing Solo and Ensemble ringing only looks intimidating. Armed with some knowledge and practice, it can be a great way to improve your ringing skills, whether ringing alone or with a full choir. By learning just a few skills in this seminar, you can be on your way! Learn about solo and ensemble music, the ins and outs of techniques such as weaving and 4-in-Hand, and how to rehearse so that you can start your own solo/ensemble ringing career.
SGR Small Group Ringing Have you ever been in a situation where you know you are going to be a few people shy for a concert and you don't know what to do? Then this is the class for you! Learn creative ways to plan for and deal with too few ringers. In a hands on way, we will cover the techniques involved in small group ringing and examine the music selections out there that can help you keep ringing when you're short on ringers.
